Status of the OPERA experiment

چکیده
The OPERA experiment in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) has been designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the muon to tau neutrino channel. The detector is hybrid, being made of an emulsion/lead target and of electronic detectors. It is placed in the CNGS neutrino beam 732 km away from the neutrino source. Runs with CNGS neutrinos were successfully carried out in 2008, 2009, and 2010. The analysis of a sample of events corresponding to 1.89× 1019 p.o.t. in the CERN CNGS νμ beam yielded the observation of a first candidate ντ CC interaction. The topology and kinematics of this candidate event is described in detail. The background sources are explained and the significance of the observation of the first ντ event candidate is assessed.

Status of the OPERA neutrino experiment
The OPERA long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment is located in the underground Gran Sasso laboratory in Italy. OPERA has been designed to give the first direct proof of ντ appearance, looking at the CNGS νμ beam 730 km away from its source at CERN. The apparatus consists of a large set of emulsion-lead targets combined with electronic detectors. First runs in 2007 and 2008 helped checkin...

In this article the physics motivation and the detector design of the OPERA experiment will be reviewed. The construction status of the detector, which will be situated in the CNGS beam from CERN to the Gran Sasso laboratory , will be reported. A survey on the physics performance will be given and the physics plan in 2006 will be presented.

The neutrino flavour oscillations hypothesis has been confirmed by several experiments, all are based on the observation of the disappearance of a given neutrino flavour. The long baseline neutrino experiment OPERA (Oscillation Project with Emulsion tRacking Apparatus) aims to give the first direct proof of the τ neutrino appearance in a pure muon neutrino beam (CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso bea...
متن کاملSearching for neutrino oscillations with OPERA
The OPERA experiment will search for neutrino oscillations using a muon neutrino beam and a hybrid emulsion-scintillator detector. Basic principles, current status and expected performance of the experiment are discussed.
متن کاملStatus of the OPERA experiment
The OPERA experiment has been designed to observe an unambiguous signal of νμ → ντ oscillation in the parameter region indicated by previous experiments in the atmospheric sector. It is based on the nuclear emulsion technique to directly observe among the neutrino interaction products the track of a τ lepton produced by a ντ appeared in a νμ beam. The OPERA detector is presently under construct...

OPERA (Oscillation Project with Emulsion tRacking Apparatus) is an international collaboration between Europe and Asia, aiming to give the first direct proof of tau neutrino appearance in a pure muon neutrino beam, in order to validate the hypothesis for atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The first european long baseline neutrino beam called CNGS is produced at CERN and sent in the direction of...
